Solve NDA previous year papers in a timed set. Analyse each question you answered. See why you lost marks. Keep track of your scores by topic. This tells you what you need to fix before the 2027 exam.
Are you solving the papers or just gathering them? This guide talks about the exam pattern, 5 step approach, Maths and GAT tips, a study plan and how to select books.
Past year papers show the real test. You learn about the types of questions, subjects, level of difficulty, and time pressure.UPSC NDA written exam has two papers, each lasting 2 hours 30 minutes:
GAT has two parts. English: 50 questions, 200 marks; General Knowledge: 100 questions carrying 400 marks.
An incorrect answer costs 1/3 of the question marks. That is 0.83 marks in Maths and 1.33 marks in GAT. There is no penalty for unattempted questions. Timed practice is the only way you learn when to guess and when to skip.
Written examination: 900 Marks. Then you clear it & go for the SSB interview.
Don’t start with a full paper on day 1. A little groundwork makes every paper more useful.
Before you attempt full papers, finish the basics of each topic first. In Maths, study algebra, trigonometry and calculus first. Begin with English grammar and the core science subjects in GAT.
You don’t have to master everything. You need enough knowledge to attempt questions and learn from the ones you miss.
Try to solve papers from at least 5 years. UPSC holds the NDA exam twice in a year, so five years gives you around ten papers per subject.
Start with the oldest papers and move forward. For a test of your readiness, save the last two papers for the last couple of weeks.
Yes. A solution tells you how to do it, not just the answer. It helps you to find shortcuts and to correct wrong steps. This is most important in Maths.
Use a simple answer key only for the final timed tests, when you want to quickly check your score.
Sitting at a desk. Set a timer for 2 hours 30 minutes. Shut your phone off. You will write your answers on a separate sheet, as you will in the exam.
Stop when the time is up. Do not add answers afterwards.
Score the paper with correct marks and the negative marking. Then mark every wrong answer and every guess, even if the guess was a right one.
Divide each mistake into one of three types:
Each group needs a different solution. Concept errors require study. Errors of calculation require slower and cleaner work. Better skip rule for wrong guesses.
Choose 2 or 3 topics where you lost most marks. Study them for a day or two. Then solve the next paper.
If you leave without revision, you will make the same errors.
After a week, re-solve the wrong questions without looking at the solutions. If you get them right, it’s a clear concept. Otherwise, return to Step 4.
Maths has 120 questions, 300 marks. This paper rewards steady practice.
NDA Maths syllabus includes 8 topics:
We see question changes yearly. So you can find the pattern. After each paper, count the number of questions from each area. After doing five papers, you will see which topics have a lot of weightage.
You get 150 minutes for 120 questions. That’s about 75 seconds per question.
Here is a plan you might try:
Leave questions that take more than 2 minutes in the first round.
Write on a piece of paper. Don’t try to do long calculations in your head. Learn squares, cubes, and common trigonometric values by heart.
Note down your calculation errors and maintain a record in the notebook. If the same mistake happens three times, make it a rule to check that step.
GAT is 600 marks, which is twice the weightage of Maths. Handle it with the same care.
English has 50 questions and 200 marks. These are the questions in each GAT paper. Solve these questions first as they take less time.
Make a note of the repeated questions, such as error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms and comprehension passages. Make a word list of every new word in the paper. Read the questions carefully and answer from the text, not from guesses.
General Knowledge: 100 questions, 400 marks. Syllabus includes Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, Current Affairs.
Group all questions from past papers by subject. Here you can see which subjects gave the most questions. Make short notes for the facts you missed. For current affairs, read a monthly digest for the last 6-12 months before the exam.
Start with the sections where you can get points fastest:
Complete each GAT paper according to your strengths and attempt the most difficult section last.
A good plan is clearly ordered. Practice second, test last, learn first.
Allocate about one-third of your total time to each phase. Adapt according to the number of months remaining.
Here’s one easy week:
Adjust the schedule to your school or college hours.

Good books facilitate practice. Poor books waste time.
4 things to watch for:
Concept book to study each topic. Then practise it using PYQ book. If there is a gap in PYQ revise to concept book and fix it.
Keep it simple. Most of the students require one concept book per subject and one PYQ book.

Solve at least 5 years’ papers, i.e about 10 papers per subject. If you have time, do more problems. Review each paper after solving.
They are a key part, but not enough on their own. Studying concepts and mock tests are also needed. Use PYQ papers to find the gaps and use books to fill the gaps.
Start with the paper you find more difficult, so you have more time to get it better. Solve both in the order of the exam with same timing in last month.
Do one full timed paper every two or three days. Review each of them the next day. Spend the next few days on your error notebook & weak topics.
